He and his family were among the first settlers of Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts, North America. In 1656 he began preaching, was an assistant to Rev. Thomas Cobbit and in 1658 became an ordained minister as a colleague of Rev. Thomas Cobbit. and many of his sermons have been printed. He also practiced medicine. He remained the pastor of the Wenham Church of Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts, North America until 1703. He was a historian and in 1677 was the author of Indian Wars, in 1680 the History of New England, A Narrative of Troubles with the Indians, "a supplement concerning the wars with the Pequots in 1637, which was published in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, North America, and The Present State of New England. "The chirography of Mr. Hubbard was not easy to read, and this probably was the reason why the committee did not complete the service assigned them, for nearly two years afterwards. On the eleventh of October, 1682, the General Court granted Fifty Pounds to the author, as "a manifestation of thankfulness" for this history, he transcribing it fairly, that it may be more easily perused." He was alone for two years in the ministry, but in 1687 his colleague, Rev. John Davison that joined him. After three years Rev. John Rogers was ordained as the colleague to Rev. William Hubbard; Rev. Rogers was nephew to Rev. Hubbard.
In 1688 he was invited to commence the commencement speech at Harvard College for that year and received a letter from Sir Edmund Andros. "Sir Edmund Andros, Knight, & c., to Rev. William Hubbard, greeting, - Whereas the Presidency or Rectorship of Harvard College, in Cambridge within this his Majestys territory and dominion of New England, is now vacant, I do there for, with the advice of Council, by these presents constitute, authorize and appoint you, the said William Hubbard, to exercise and officiate as President of said College, at the next Commencement to be had for the same in as full and ample a manner as any former President or Rector hath or ought to have enjoyed." Dr. Elliot said of him, "He was certainly, for many years, the most eminent minister in the County of Essex-Equal to any in the province for leanring and candor, and superior to all his contemporaries as a writer." Gov. Hutchinson said he was "a man of learning, and of candid, benevolent mind." He was Treasurer of Suffolk County, Massachusetts, North America.
